이섬 작가의 <새로운 이웃>은 부산 바다에 새롭게 정착한 연산호의 이야기를 다루고 있습니다. 연산호는 다채로운 색채와 부드러운 형태를 가진 산호로, 제주 바다에서 서식하다 산호 백화 현상으로 인해 그 개체수가 급감하며 부산 바다로 이주한 종입니다. 이러한 생태적 변화는 현대 사회가 직면한 ‘이주’와 ‘난민’ 문제를 떠올리게 하며, 인간과 자연의 연결된 이야기를 담아냅니다.

이섬은 해저 생물에 대한 호기심을 바탕으로, 산호를 통해 상상계와 상징계 사이의 경계를 탐구해왔습니다. 그녀에게 산호는 단순한 해양 생물이 아니라, 내면의 억압된 욕망과 연결된 존재이기도 합니다. 작가는 이를 표현하기 위해 3D 프린터를 활용한 도자 흙, 재활용 플라스틱 등의 친환경 소재 실험과 더불어 AR, XR, 메타버스와 같은 디지털 기술을 적극 활용하며 탄소발자국을 줄이고 지속 가능한 작업 방식을 모색해왔습니다.

이 전시는 부산 바다에 자리 잡은 새로운 연산호를 통해, 변화와 적응, 그리고 환경 문제에 대한 고민을 함께 나누고자 합니다. 형형색색의 산호 조각은 관객의 눈길을 끌지만, 작가는 그 시선이 단순히 아름다움에 머무르지 않고, 환경과 인간의 연결고리를 다시 한번 생각하게 하길 바랍니다.

New Neighbors is the latest work in Lee Sum’s Candy Ocean series, focusing on the story of soft corals that have recently migrated to the waters of Busan. Known for their vibrant hues and soft, flowing forms, soft corals were once abundant in the waters around Jeju Island. However, due to coral bleaching driven by climate change, their population has significantly declined, and they have now begun to settle in the waters of Busan. This ecological phenomenon draws striking parallels to the migration and refugee crises faced by humanity today.

Lee Sum’s fascination with corals originated from her fear of the deep sea, which paradoxically became the source of inspiration and creative drive for her work. For the artist, corals symbolize repressed desires and untapped potentials left in the imagination—a connection to the subconscious. To bring these ideas to life, she experiments with sustainable 3D printing materials such as ceramic clay and recycled plastics while integrating carbon-reducing technologies like AR, XR, and the metaverse into her practice.

Through this exhibition, Lee Sum invites us to reflect on adaptation, resilience, and our intertwined relationship with nature. The vividly colored coral sculptures captivate the eye, yet the artist hopes that visitors will look beyond their surface beauty to consider the deeper questions of coexistence and environmental stewardship.
